Memorial Weekend Trip

For the long weekend we decided to take a trip to my parent's ranch in Corning, CA.  My kids were in heaven the entire time.  Getting there was a bit of a different story.  I picked up the 2 of our kids from school at 12, but by the time we got out of there it was more like 12:30.  Then of course the kids were hungry so we got something to eat and then got onto the road around 1p.  We hit traffic in Fremont that didn't really let up until we got to Vacaville!  Instead of a 2 hour 45 minute trip it took a good 4 hours.  Luckily I planned ahead with some great videos.  I found some old episodes of Magic School Bus and burned those to a dvd.  Then the best was I found some Punky Brewster videos!  I LOVED that show as a little girl.  I tried to be just like her.  When the opening song came on I instantly could remember all the words.  My kids really enjoyed the show so I'll have to find more episodes for them.

Once we made it up there the kids got right to work hunting for lizards.  Lilliana managed to catch one in a bag but when I tried to get a picture of it it quickly took the opportunity for escape (smart lizard).

After dinner Grandpa took the kids on a ride on the polaris (it's a glorified golf cart).  He must have taken them somewhere fun because I could hear them screaming and laughing.

The sun was setting and it was just beautiful.

It was a full moon that night.

After a busy day Camille helped Shelby (my Mom's dog get ready for bed).
The next morning Allison promptly went into Grandpa's office and got to work. (Staying at the ranch isn't free - there's work to do!)
We had planned to go out to Whiskeytown lake and do some boating, but the boat wasn't working so while Grandpa Gary went out to see if it could be fixed, Grandma showed the kids around the ranch.  First stop the chicken coop.

Next was an unscheduled stop to check out one of the tractors (I don't know if that's what it's really called, but let's just call it that shall we).  Mark was very anxious for Grandpa to get back so they could go for a ride on it.

They raise pheasants for hunting clubs on the ranch, so next we went to see the baby chicks.  Camille is holding a 2 week old pheasant.

We got a call from Grandpa telling us to get ready because the boat is fixed.  So off we went to the lake.  The kids did some swimming (although the water was quite chilly still).  Lilliana and Mark also both got a turn to drive the boat.  I don't think either are ready for a driver's license anytime soon.

There was a special event at the lake for sailboating.  As a result there were a ton of sailboats on the water.

The kids went lizard hunting later in the day.

Sunday after church it was rather windy and I had brought some kites with us.  Camille became a pro kite flier.

We decided to help Kevin the ranch foreman and collected the eggs from the pheasants that afternoon.  Again Camille was a pro.  When the birds would get startled they would fly up and hit the ceiling of the aviary.  Surprisingly Camille stayed calm and just waited for the birds to calm down as well.

Monday was a bit cooler so Grandpa took the kids fishing in one of their ponds.  It had a TON of bass fish.  You caught a fish almost everytime you put a hook in the water.  Incidentally these ponds were also recently used to help put out a local fire with a helicopter and the big bucket that scoops up the water to drop it on the fire.

After a great weekend it was time to head home!  Thanks Grandpa and Grandma for such a fun time.
